The Earthquake in Japan Measuring 9.0: The Trauma Induced with the Survivors
The 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami devastated Japan on March 11, 2011. It is estimated that at least 20 thousand are deceased or missing. Now the people that survived have to manage the challenges of the financial and emotional stress incurred, lack of coping skills for some, the need for more daily provisions, the physical injuries they may have sustained, and others. According to leading psychologists, while many people will be able to adjust to life after the quake, some will suffer serious psychological problems.
The ones with a high degree of psychological risk are the survivors with:
- No current support network or at best a very limited support network
- Psychological disorders that have not been clinically dealt with
- A mood or mental disorder that is pre-existing such as Major Depression
- Coping skills that are either impaired or non-existent
- Past trauma that is still unresolved or has yet to be treated
Common experiences of survivors post disaster, like what hit Japan, include:
–Disassociative symptoms
–Mood swings
–Sleeping difficulty
–Severely decreased appetite
–Easily startled
–Extra sensitivity to the triggers of trauma, like an aftershock
–Shock
The Kobe earthquake in 1995 marked the first earthquake in Japan’s history to spur an organized psychiatric trauma response effort. Since Japan’s 2011 earthquake, psychiatric teams have gone into the area and assisted those in need. The priority of the mental health response effort has actually been to assist survivors in meeting physical needs prior to addressing any psychological needs. It is common for survivors of a disaster to not be able to process their emotional situation while enduring grave physical needs. In spite of relief efforts, it is estimated that many survivors will experience psychological symptoms for years to come.
Japan’s sense of community and their strong family values will pose to be great advantages in their rebuilding efforts. It is necessary for those effected to receive both physical and psychological healing. Both will be aided by Japan’s emphasis on support, community and teamwork. For other societies who may be lacking, Japan’s efforts in implementing effective support networks can serve as a model to duplicate. The survival of that community may count on it.

Caveman $0.79 Yes, that’s a former Beatle in caveman costume for this more-dumb-than-funny 1981 comedy about a prehistoric misfit (Ringo Starr) who recruits other misfits to start a new tribe. The jokes about flatulence and sex are banal, but the cast of then-unfamiliar faces is fun to watch from the perspective of history. The best thing going are some dinosaur special effects, though Ringo might argue meeting… |

Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray] $10.93 Many early science fiction films are now, quite inadvertently (and in most cases undeservedly), objects of camp attention: we laugh at the silly makeup, tin-can special effects, and the naive “high-tech” dialogue. Planet of the Apes is no such film. Its intelligent script, frightening costuming, and savagely effective conclusion (which needs no big-budget special effects to augment its impact) rem… |

El Norte (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] $18.25 The audience for El Norte splits into two factions. There are those who, ever since its 1983 Telluride Film Festival unveiling, have spoken reverently of it as a great film, “a Grapes of Wrath for our time.” And then there are those who find it a decent movie deserving of respect as passionate social protest, but seriously compromised by a Filmmaking 101 approach. Hailed as “the first epic” of the… |
