Amazon Announces That Sales Of Kindle Books Are Now Bigger Than Sales Of Paperbacks
It’s not that long since Amazon announced that they were selling more Kindle books than hardback editions.They are now advising that Kindle books are even outselling paperbacks. It seems to be just a matter of time before Kindle books are selling more than hardbacks and paperbacks combined.
When you think about it, it has an air of inevitability.After all, people who are prepared to shell out $ 139 for a Kindle reader are going to be the ones who read a lot of books aren’t they? Of course, there will always be some book lovers who prefer the feel of a “real” book – but, over the piece, we do seem to be heading towards a situation where e-books assume ever greater importance in the world of publishing.
There is certainly a good selection of Kindle books available for buyers to choose from.Right now there are more than 800,000 Kindle books to choose from on the Amazon website. This number is increasing every day – and there are an additional 1.8 million out of copyright books which are available as free downloads. These include titles by authors such as Charles Dickens, Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Homer, Tacitus to name but a few.
Amazon has also released a variety of free apps to permit Kindle books to be read without the need for a Kindle reader. Apps exist for the Mac, the PC, the iPad, the iPhone, the Blackberry and any device running the Android operating system. A new app the the latest HP tablet computer is rumored to be in development. What this means is that users needn’t worry about their Kindle becoming obsolete. Additionally, each app also operates as an additional sales outlet for Amazon.
Currently, Amazon are thought to have approximately 90% of the e-book market. That’s not sustainable in the long term and industry experts are suggesting that we will see a three way split between Google, Apple and Amazon – of roughly equal proportions – by 2015. However, many of those same analysts predicted that the launch of the Apple iPad would sound the death knell for the Kindle, and they didn’t exactly get that right did they?
In fact, the new third generation Kindle reader is selling better than ever. It was Amazon’s best selling product (again) over the 2010 festive sales season, and the Kindle has now been Amazon’s top selling product for eighteen months. Sales forecasts for 2011 have been raised from 5 million to 8 million based upon recent results. Some market rationalisation seems inevitable in future, but there’s nothing to suggest any reduction in the Kindle’s dominance in the short to medium term.
