Excellent Sales Numbers Reported For The Amazon Kindle Over Xmas
Now that the dust from the festive sales season has died down a little, it seems obvious that it has been another enormously successful year for the Amazon Kindle ebook reader. The latest generation Kindle, released at the end of August 2010 has pretty much continued where the Kindle 2.0 left off and maintained it’s position as Amazon’s number one selling product.
Over the Christmas sales period (November 14 to December 19) it outsold all other items on the Amazon website. The 8GB Apple iPod Touch took second place.
As usual, Amazon is playing its cards pretty close to its corporate chest when it comes to actual numbers. However, industry analysts have now revised their prediction for the 2011 sales of Kindle readers from 5 million to 8 million. Amazon also has an astonishing 90% share of the current ebook market.
It’s the combined effect of the Kindle reader and the huge choice of Kindle books which seems to seal the deal for Amazon. At the moment, customers can choose from a selection of over 800,000 Kindle books. Over and above those paid titles there are another 1.8 million out of copyright titles – including classics by such famous authors as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, Homer, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte – which can be downloaded free of charge. You can expand your library and save money at the same time.
Amazon has also been very clever in making so many free Kindle “apps” available. These allow users to read Kindle books on other portable electronic devices, so there’s no need to worry about losing your ebook library should you decide to change hardware. At this time, Kindle apps exist for the Windows PC, the Mac computer, the Apple iPhone, the iPad, Blackberry’s smart phone and any device which runs Android. Of course, all of these apps, as well as being convenient for end users, are very effective retail outlets for Kindle books.
Whatever your personal feelings may be regarding the comparison between ebook readers and “real” books, it seems fairly clear that the Amazon Kindle is the leading ebook reader by a long way. The only real competition to the Kindle at the moment comes in the shape of Apple’s iPad, a device which retails for more than triple the Kindle price.
Analysts are predicting that Amazon’s share of the ebook market will drop off in the coming years. However, considering that their current market share is 90%, that is scarcely a damning indictment. The only way is down. It’s forecast that, by 2015, there will be a roughly equal split in ebook sales between Amazon, Google and Apple. Of course, based upon current growth, Amazon will have a smaller percentage of a very much larger market.
At the moment, there is little to suggest that the dominance of the Kindle is reducing. There is no sign that the launch of the iPad has had any adverse effect on Amazon’s strategy. There will, no doubt, be some rationalisation as the market develops and matures – but in the meantime Amazon look set to make the most of their dominant position and will probably continue to be one of the driving forces in the electronic publishing arena for a long time to come.
