Sales Of E-Books Top Paperback Books On Amazon
After a successful Christmas spurt, the e-ink is on the wall for traditional publishing. Amazon.com is reporting that it saw more Kindle eBooks sold in January than Paperbacks. According to Amazon's figures, for every 100 paperbacks purchased, 115 kindle e-books will be sold. Hardcovers meanwhile are lagging behind by some way, with three hundred digital books for every 100 hardbacks. The good news just keeps coming for Amazon too. Despite rolling out their kindle store to many rival devices (including Apple's iPad), the Kindle hardware itself saw 8 million sales in the last year. Healthy kindle sales despite iPad's parallel success just go to prove that people have enormous faith in the future of tablet-devices as ways of consuming text. When we Fly Drive Australia or take a journey anywhere else in the world, we'll have these useful devices constantly at our side to entertain us. Can't we?
The revelation will reignite the debate about whether digital sales are the future, and whether physical products still have a place in the market. But is this really what we want? Are people really convinced that the competitively priced (but still luxury) kindle will be with us on extensive Australia tours? There's plenty of arguments for either medium and against either medium. The environmental imperative is entirely justified: I would rather a world where no more trees are killed on Tom Clancy's behalf. As for the space requirements of having a house full of books? Well, it's sometimes nice to have a library, but properties ARE getting smaller.
However, these devices are as comparatively inflexible as the materials they are made of: a paper book has so many uses. Kindle is not a platform that is useful for students, who are surely the greatest consumers of books of any real worth. A kindle is still too much of luxury item for any proper student to own, but say a hard working student managed to acquire one, what would they make of the lack of easy manual browsing and old fashioned annotation?. And frankly, who would bring a Kindle to the poolside as they cruise Australia? If a book gets a slight splash, you wipe it off and get back to reading. An electronic device doesn't like water, and it costs a lot more, to boot.
